Smoking & SIDS

Babies should not be exposed to cigarette smoke before or after birth.  Research has shown a definite increase in the risk of SIDS that is associated with smoking.

Smoking during pregnancy is very dangerous and increases the risk of SIDS and other health related conditions.  Babies of smokers often have a lower birth weight.  To improve the health of your baby, Mom’s should quit smoking or at least cut down on the amount smoked.  Dads should quit too because second hand smoke is just as dangerous for Mom and Baby.

IMPORTANT: Smoking mothers should never bed share with their baby because the risk of SIDS is doubled.  We are not sure why bed sharing is so dangerous but we do know that non smokers reduce the risk of SIDS considerably.

Remember, never smoke in a car or room with an expectant mom or a baby present. Today, throughout Canada, many communities are not allowing smoking in public areas.  Please remember, do not take your baby into smoky places.

Please do not smoke while holding your baby even outside.
