The Canadian Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (CFSID) is dedicated to reducing infant mortality and the rate of sudden and unexpected infant deaths, and to the emotional support of those who are affected. As part of its mandate, CFSID has created two online courses to educate parents, caregivers, professionals and anyone that cares for baby on risk reduction methods and safe sleep practices.
In 2008, 75% of undetermined infant deaths in Ontario involved unsafe sleeping environments. Also known as Crib Death, SIDS refers to the sudden and unexpected death of an apparently healthy infant under one year of age. Such deaths usually occur while the child is sleeping and remain unexplained even after a full investigation. Nobody knows how to prevent SIDS, but the latest research shows that there are things you can do to make your baby safer.
The ABCs of Safe Sleep course explores the risk factors associated with SIDS and provides caregivers with information to improve the health and safety of infants and reduce the risk of SIDS. This course is designed for parents, grandparents, babysitters, day care workers and other individuals who provide care to infants. Read more
The Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) for Health Care Professionals online course is designed to provide up-to-date research and relevant recommendations for reducing the risk of SIDS and infant deaths. Practices performed by healthcare professionals are the strongest influence for new parents in caring for their babies. This course stresses the importance of the health care providers’ role in educating parents and caregivers. The course was also intended for organizations outside of the traditional healthcare setting. Staff from child welfare agencies and public health units can benefit from the information provided in this course. Read more
