SIDS and Monitors
Monitors do not reduce the risk of SIDS
Some parents find it reassuring to use a monitor between rooms to listen to noises in a baby’s room. These monitors are for reassurance and allow parents to be responsive to children who are in another room. Monitors are great for notifying you that your baby is awake, crying or upset.
There is no evidence that using a monitor prevents SIDS or that there is any scientific benefit from the monitors. Some parents may feel more relaxed and reassured using a monitor, but others may find that using a monitor increases their anxiety, especially if “false alarms” are often experienced.
It is important to remember parents must follow the steps to reduce the risk of SIDS even if using a monitor for their baby.
