  • Define “Sudden Infant Death Syndrome” and recall SIDS-related statistics
  • Recall what is currently known about the causes of SIDS
  • Identify common misconceptions about SIDS
  • Recognize the psychological and physical effects of a SIDS death on parents and others and identify how you can help parents and caregivers cope with their loss
  • Identify the specific risk factors for SIDS known at this time
  • Identify strategies for reducing the risk of SIDS related to smoking, sleep position, sleep surface, bedding, and car seats
  • Identify new and more controversial recommendations for reducing the risk of SIDS related to pacifier use, bed sharing and room sharing, sleeping arrangements for twins, immunization, and bedding toxins
  • Recognize the issue of positional plagiocephaly (flat head) in babies and recall ways to avoid having it develop
  • Recognize that cribs, playpens, and other pieces of baby equipment must be chosen and used with care when creating a safe sleeping environment for an infant at home and away
  • Recall information that alternate caregivers (grandparents, babysitters, childcare facilities, etc) need to know when caring for an infant

Subject Matter Expert

Guenther Krueger is a former nurse and counsellor who recently completed research for his PhD at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia on the subject of outcomes in families who have experienced sudden infant death syndrome. Currently, he is associated with the University of California at San Francisco in a research project involving paediatric palliative care.
